Lichens: Looking at Small Things

Wednesday 22nd May

Lichens: Looking at Small Things

With Pete Martin.
Pete lives in Ambleside and is one of the founders of Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group. He is fascinated by the patterns lichens make, the stories they tell and the questions they raise.

Pete will talk about how to use a hand lens; discuss how we think lichens work and how we start to tell them apart; introduce 5 types of lichen that everyone in Cumbria should know.  It’ll be good preparation for the walk at Naddle a few days later if you are able to join that event as well.

Bring along some lichen covered sticks for us to look at throughout the evening – we will have some hand lenses to use – but if you have your own, please bring that too.

Doors open 7pm

Talk starts at 7.30

Opportunity for Q & A

Spaces limited – please book below

Venue – The Old Courthouse, Shap

The talk is free to attend – but please make a donation, if you can, on the evening.

The Cumbria Lichen and Bryophyte Group is a self-study group for everyone interested in learning, recording, conserving or simply enjoying Cumbria’s lichens and bryophytes (regardless of experience) – and we promote their conservation.

They arrange field trips roughly once a month.

Looking at Lichens in Naddle Forest

Sunday 26th May

Looking at Lichens in
Naddle Forest

Have a look for lichens on the trees and rocks in Naddle Forest at Wild Haweswater, which is managed by the RSPB and United Utilities.  This includes some temperate rainforest species such as tree lungwort. Lichen features are often quite small but can be seen using a hand lens or in photos.

Lichens are long-lived mini-ecosystems: a symbiosis of fungi, algae and more. They can give an indication of the ecological health of its habitat.
